LGBT Film/Video Festival Closing Night: 52 Tuesdays
October 26, 2014
Screening begins at 7 p.m.
A remarkable family story in a festival of remarkable family stories, 52 Tuesdays is a year – truly 52 consecutive Tuesdays – in the relationship between a mother and a daughter. These Tuesdays comprise the year the mother starts to gender transition and sends her daughter, 16 year-old Billie, to live with her father, the two agreeing to reserve Tuesday afternoons as regularly scheduled time together.
The year brings changes for both of them: James, the transitioning parent, working to declare his identity while maintaining a sense to the relationship with the daughter he loves, and Billie, unmoored a bit, and maybe somewhat defiant, beginning to explore her own sexuality, making clumsy stabs at adulthood in the process. Both stumble towards new declarations of identity, and the balance the two work to sustain between their own relationship and their emerging sense of self makes for a compelling, quite moving dance.
The film-making itself worked to meet the dictates of the characters’ relationship. Filmmaker Sophie Hyde shot the film over the course of a single year also, in chronological order — and only on Tuesdays. The non-professional cast got their scripts, and only their own lines, one week in advance. No gimmick this: 52 Tuesdays accumulates powerfully, the aches and triumphs of the characters genuinely felt. (Sophie Hyde, Australia, 109 min., 2013)
